Windows Server 2003 - Please Leave the Building!
If your company has an ageing Windows server 2003 still on the network, then you need to do something about it, as it's days are very much numbered...
Windows server 2003 and server 2003 SBS are reliable workhorses, but they go end-of-life in July 2015, and businesses need to think about migrating away from them - if they haven't already.
What is going to happen?
After July 14th 2015, Microsoft is ending support for Server 2003 and Server 2003 SBS. That means that much like Windows XP when that went out of support in 2014, your server operating system will no longer be supported by Microsoft. This means that there will be no more security updates or patches and you will potentially be at risk from cyber attacks. Third-party software vendors will also start to scale back support for Server 2003 and you may find that newer applications or upgrades do not install or function correctly.
Should we be worried?
Short answer is no. A lot of businesses are in the same position, so you are not alone. You should bear in mind that as well as the Server Operating System going end-of-life, it is likely that any hardware running Server 2003 is likely to be fairly old, so that is another reason to do something about it. The key is to get a plan in place and migrate your data and systems in a controlled manner, to your timescale.
